Marta becomes the all-time top scorer of the World Cup

Brazil star Marta set a record on Tuesday as she scored her 17th career Women’s World Cup goal. The goal came from the penalty spot 74 minutes into Tuesday’s group stage clash with Italy, which Brazil ended up winning 1-0 behind the Marta goal. Marta stepped up and smashed her spot-kick into the bottom right-hand corner, giving Brazil a lead they would never relinquish while making a bit of history in the process.  Marta’s 17th goal was enough to lead her past German star Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals across four World Cups as a member of the German national team. She is the only footballer to score at five different World Cup editions   The 33-year-old forward, who is the only footballer to score at five different World Cup editions, has scored 112 total goals...

USA 13-0 Thailand: 2019 Women’s World Cup

The reigning champions delivered a 13-0 thrashing, scoring more goals than any other team in tournament history, and then consoled their opponents. There were too many goals to begin to describe them all in a newspaper article. But these were the scorers and the minutes when the goals came: Alex Morgan (12th), Rose Lavelle (20th), Lindsey Horan (32nd), Sam Mewis (50th), Morgan (53rd), Mewis (54th), Lavelle (56th), Morgan (74th), Megan Rapinoe (79th), Morgan (81st), Mallory Pugh (85th), Morgan (87th), and, finally, Lloyd (92nd). It was the first time a team had scored 13 goals in a World Cup game — men’s or women’s — and the margin of victory was the largest for a match in either tournament. Morgan’s five goals equaled a record for a Women’s World Cup game set by Michelle Akers of the Unite...

Portugal edges Netherlands to clinch Nations League title

Portugal have added the UEFA Nations League crown to their UEFA EURO 2016 triumph after Gonçalo Guedes’s second-half strike downed the Netherlands. Defences held sway in an even first 59 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo, Memphis Depay and Bernardo Silva all carried menace, but as soon as they encountered their opponents’ defensive walls, impenetrable fortifications marshalled by Virgil van Dijk and José Fonte, they floundered. Then, on the hour, came the breakthrough. Bernardo Silva looked to have overcooked his disguised pass to Guedes, but the Valencia forward wrapped his foot around it and squeezed a shot inside the post. Despite getting two hands to the ball, Jasper Cillessen could not keep it out. The Oranje have become used to falling behind and responded gamely, with Depay goi...

Real Madrid signs Eden Hazard from Chelsea

Real Madrid signed Eden Hazard from Chelsea on Friday for its second major offseason addition, and reportedly its most expensive ever. The 28-year-old forward joined Madrid on a five-year contract and a transfer fee reported to be around 100 million euros ($113 million) plus variables, which would make him the club’s biggest signing. Madrid is rebuilding after one of the worst seasons in club history and had added forward Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week. The Spanish club hadn’t made any blockbuster signings in years and was yet to bring in a top player to try to replace Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal forward left to join Juventus last season. Hazard had already indicated his final game for Chelsea was last week’s Europa League final victory over Arsenal. With tw...

Liverpool to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar

Liverpool will be heading to Qatar this year after FIFA announced the host nation for the next two Club World Cup competitions. The Reds secured their spot in the seven-team competition after they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday. While FIFA has plans to expand the tournament to 24 teams, the FIFA Council confirmed that the 2019 and 2020 competitions would stick with the seven-team format and Qatar would be the host. FIFA has also said that the subsequent tournaments would be «valuable test events in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022.» The FIFA Council plans to expand the Club World Cup after it voted on a revamped version of the competition back in March. Under the new format, which will be introduced in the 2021 edition from June to July, the Clu...

Liverpool crowned UEFA Champions League winners

It was Mohamed Salah, such a disconsolate figure when he was injured early in that loss to Real Madrid, who set Liverpool on their way with a penalty after two minutes when Moussa Sissoko was contentiously punished for handball. In a final that rarely touched the heights of the blockbuster semi-finals that made this an all-Premier League showpiece, Spurs had chances but were denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson, who saved well from Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen. And their failure to capitalise was ruthlessly punished when substitute Divock Origi ensured manager Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool manager by driving low and powerfully past Hugo Lloris with three minutes left. Spurs counterpart Mauricio Pochettino took the gamble of selecting England captain and m...

Neymar rape allegation, the real story

PSG and Brazilian «superstar» Neymar has denied an accusation that he raped a woman in Paris. According to a police report filed in São Paulo, the woman alleges that the attack took place in a hotel in the French capital, where Neymar plays for Paris St-Germain (PSG). According to police documents, the woman – who has not been named – got to know Neymar on Instagram and he suggested they meet in Paris. The Footballer  provided her with an air ticket from Brazil to France and a reservation at a luxury hotel in Paris. After conversation and embraces, “at some point, Neymar became aggressive, and through violence, engaged in sexual intercourse against the will of the victim”, the police document states. The...
